Long-term or permanent status after meeting qualifying conditions — based on skilled work, family sponsorship, long residence, investment, study-to-work progression or humanitarian status. Includes UK Indefinite Leave to Remain, Canada PR, Australia permanent skilled/family visas, NZ resident visas, Ireland Long Term Residency and EU long-term residence routes. For Malaysia and Sri Lanka, long-stay residence may be more suitable than ordinary PR.
For eligible family members — spouse, civil partner, unmarried partner, dependant children — to accompany or join a main applicant under student, skilled work, business, investor, family, residence, digital nomad or long-stay routes.
Spouse, partner, child, parent and family-reunification routes for joining citizens, permanent residents, settled persons, recognised refugees or residence-permit holders. Sponsor's status, income, accommodation and relationship evidence are usually decisive.
For international students who have completed eligible studies and want to remain temporarily to work, gain experience or move into a skilled work route — named graduate visas in some countries, orientation years, job-search permits or graduate transition routes in others.
Enter or remain for a limited period to search for employment without an existing offer. Examples: Germany Opportunity Card, Austria Job-Seeker Visa for very highly qualified workers, Netherlands Orientation Year, Finland post-study job-search residence, Sweden and other European graduate transition routes.
For remote workers, freelancers, online professionals and business owners earning income from outside the destination country. Applicants must show foreign income, remote-work evidence, health insurance and sufficient funds. Strong digital nomad options include Spain, Malaysia and Sri Lanka.
Work independently, provide professional services, operate a business or practise a liberal profession. Routes typically require a clear business activity, professional background, financial evidence, client contracts, business plan and registration documents.
Establish a business, invest funds, expand commercial activity or join an approved business project. Some countries offer start-up or entrepreneur routes; others focus on investor residence, innovation, business approval or job creation. Older investor routes in some countries may be closed or changed — each case must be checked carefully.
Live abroad without taking local employment — based on pension, savings, passive income, accommodation and health insurance. Some countries offer specific retirement or non-working residence routes.
For approved religious activities, cultural programmes, conferences, performances, training, voluntary service, official events, sports events or specialist assignments. Correct visa depends on activity, duration, inviting organisation, sponsorship and payment arrangements.
For private medical treatment, specialist consultation, surgery, recovery, medical assistance or to accompany a patient. Some countries treat medical travel under visitor visas; others provide medical residence or special permission depending on length and purpose of stay.
Short educational programmes, language courses, professional training, workshops, internships, exchange programmes or temporary study activities — under short-term study visa, visitor-permitted study, training visa, residence permit for training or internship category.
Naturalisation, citizenship registration, dual citizenship and long residence planning. Rules differ in every country — some allow dual citizenship, some restrict it, and some require long residence, language knowledge, good character or integration before citizenship.
Some countries allow administrative review, appeal, objection, reconsideration, tribunal review, judicial review or a fresh application after a refusal. The first step is to read the refusal letter carefully and identify the exact reason. Some cases suit review; others are stronger as fresh applications with better evidence.
